How the Entertainment Industry is Dealing with the Effects of COVID-19

By Nora Hanna

Covid-19 has affected almost everyone and everything in many different ways which includes how people are going back to school and work, sport events, eating at or from restaurants, but a big one is the entertainment industry which includes music and movies.

The Entertainment industry has been a part of our lives whether you listen to music, like to watch movies and tv shows, or watch the big music events and movie awards such as the Grammys, Vmas, the Oscars, etc. But, what’s happening to that industry now with the effects of COVID-19?

Many movies that were set to premiere this year have gotten called off or delayed. Many movies got a new release dating such as

Wonder Woman 1984 coming out on October 2nd (orig. June 2020 )

Marvel’s Black Widow coming out on November 6th (orig. May 1, 2020)

Tenet coming out on August 26th internationally and Labor Day weekend in select US cities (orig. July 17, 2020)

But some movie got taken off their schedules and now have unspecified release dates like

The French Dispatch that was supposed to be coming out in October, but in July they decided to not release it just yet

David Attenborough: A Life on our Planet with its original release date on April 16, now it’s not just the cinema release that’s cancelled but the stream on Netflix as well.

Even movie and music awards, festivals, and conferences have had a lot of changes or have gotten cancelled completely this year. Some big ones are the MTV Video Music Awards, also known as the VMAs, this year wasn’t held inside the Brooklyn Barclays Center and wasn’t held outside. Instead, they did the awards with no audience so it was sure that no one would get sick. Also, MTVs Movie and TV awards got postponed on June 9th.

The Golden Globes got cancelled and was moved to February 28, 2021. The Oscars got pushed to April 25, 2021 due to the February 28th cut off date.

Also, the two big music festivals, Coachella and Stagecoach were first being rescheduled for October 9th and October 23rd of this year, but then got officially cancelled as a result of the ongoing pandemic.

Concerts have even been cancelled like Justin Bieber’s Changes Tour, Billie Eilish’s Where Do We Go Tour, and Taylor Swift’s Lover Tour.

Even though many have been cancelled, a few are being postponed/rescheduled to 2021 which includes: Harry Style’s “Harry Style’s Love on Tour”, The Weeknd’s After Hours Tour, Camila Cabello, The Rolling Stones, Doja Cat, Steve Aoki’s Neon Future IV: The Color of Noise Tour

With all these cancellations and postponements, what have these musicians and actors/actresses been doing during their free time and during quarantine?

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson have been listening to a playlist called “Quarantunes” who’ve tested positive for Covid-19.

Harry Styles has used this time to study Italian and sign language.

Ariana Grande has been watching old seasons of top model, facetimed her loved ones, and did a cover on Whitney Houston’s “I Believe in You and Me”.

Some musicians have even released their songs and recorded for us during quarantine which include

These two collaborations: Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber’s “Stuck with U” and Lady Gaga with Ariana Grande’s “Rain on Me”

Twenty One Pilots with “Level of Concern”

Charli XCX has been writing a full album about the pandemic

Alec Benjamin released a song inspired by the pandemic called “Six Feet Apart”

A big part of the entertainment industry is theatre. Quoted from Mrs. Lewalski, “One of the biggest challenges is figuring out if we will be able to perform live. We can do rehearsals with masks and keeping socially distant as much as possible, but we do not know when we can do a live performance.” With COVID-19, it’ll be hard to do live performances with social distancing and setting up how people will be watching the show.
