2020 - A World Changed Forever

Image
Changes In The World   Our world is changing more drastically every single day. More than we can keep up with. Some are bombarded by the election and others about the health of our world and how we can help. This December the presidential election is coming up, which means it is a very tense, controversial and serious time. This puts a lot of stress on everyone to go out and vote for who they believe is the best candidate. The presidential election shows us that we don't all think the same and are entitled to our own opinions. The election is always a very important time in the year, and usually causes conflict, debate, and controversy through our society. The first debates are coming up starting on september 29, this is the first time the two candidates will have a live debate with each other for this election. For the first time in what seems like forever, social distancing has become less strict. With coronavirus cases lowering everyday, people from all over the world a...

Presidential Debate 2020

Image
The 2020 Election Race It is Monday, Sept 28. The next election is in 35 days and coming quickly. With the huge support both sides are getting, we could be in for an interesting and competitive election year. 2020 has been a drama filled year with everything that has been going on with the issues of coronavirus, wildfires, and the looting and burning of cities. With these factors in play, it has kinda taken everyone's minds off the election that we will have.  According to a Times/Siena poll, Joe Biden has a 49% lead to president to Trump's 41%. For this to happen, Biden would have to win one of President Trump's last states he won in his election race with Hillary Clinton. To make a difference, they would have to be a largely populated state that he won last election such as Pennsylvania, Michigan, Louisiana, Texas, Ohio, Florida, Etc.  Most national polls have Biden over Trump. Last election, Hillary Clinton had more national polls and had 3 million more votes t...

Black Friday?

Image
Black Friday 2020 By Rachel Kidder Black Friday 2020 is coming on November 27th. Some shoppers are questioning whether or not in person shopping should be allowed due to the COVID pandemic. The Black Friday Deals are still on in the US, many stores are opening up online sales earlier and earlier. Black Friday deals will happen far ahead of Thanksgiving, with early start dates at the top of November and even in October.   Many stores are giving workers the day off on Thanksgiving to decrease the in person contact due to the whole pandemic. There are many people who say that in person shopping is not going to happen this year.  “Don't believe the hype that says 'Black Friday is cancelled'” says Gareth Beavis, a shopping blogger. The deals will just be online and spread out instead of narrowly launching in a single weekend, according to Best Buy and other retailer's plans, and retailers are supporting Green Monday 2020 on December 14, for last-minute deals before Ch...

Thanksgiving Time!

Image
Thanksgiving Time!! By: Alina Prykazka This year, thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26. Families are going to be gathered around their dining table, ready to feast. It is going to be hard, since the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has affected all of our activities, sports, and holidays. Even though this will affect the way we celebrate thanksgiving and will have more precautions,  it is still important to spend time with your family.  Before inviting all of your guests, let them know that if they are feeling a bit sick or anything of the sort, they should stay home. This is very important because anything could happen. Even if there is a slim chance of anything major, do not risk it, it is always better to stay safe.  At this time, it is better to wear a mask and keep at least six feet apart from people that are not from your household. Since that would be hard, it is suggested that going outside is a great idea, since there is more space and it is not cluste...

High School Fall Sports in Michigan

Image
Mighigan’s High School Sports By Rachel Maltese Covid-19 is affecting everyone right now. But how is it affecting High School sports in Michigan? On September 9th, Governor Whitmer clarified that masks must be worn in training, and in competition only when athletes cannot keep a safe distance from each other. Football, soccer, and volleyball are sports where Whitmer says face coverings are a must. But sports such as tennis, golf, cross country, baseball, and softball have been exempted from that rule.  The MHSAA has just recently allowed fall football to take place. Originally, football was going to be postponed until spring, but now things are looking up. Boys soccer is also allowed to take place, along with girls swimming/diving and girls volleyball in certain areas. The spectator limit is 2 per player for indoor and outdoor events as well. How is Foley handling these rules thou...

Halloween 2020 By: Andrea Friedel It’s no surprise that 2020 has been looking a bit different from the past years, but what does that mean for upcoming holidays like Halloween? Halloween is a wonderful time when you dress up and walk from house to house to receive candy. But this year, some decided it would be safer and a relief if Halloween was canceled.  Halloween is no doubt a big day in adults’ and kids’ lives. It puts a fine line between everyday life and brings joy to those who dress up and those who hand out candy. According to Los Angeles Times , Los Angeles County’s Department of Health has already revoked haunted houses and parties. They also recommend not trick or treating because it violates the social distancing codes. Other people like Andrew Cuomo, the Governor of New York are giving trick or treaters the choice, but highly advise you to stick to your neighborhood at most. “I will not ban trick or treaters going door to door,” said Cuomo from abc.ny.com. O...

Fall Fashion

Image
Fall Fashion 2020 Even though 2020 has been a horrible and messy year with the pandemic, forest wildfires, and having to social distance, there's one thing that won’t be horrible or a mess this year: the 2020 fall fashion. From the patchwork pants down to the shoulder bags and bucket hats, there’s so much that you don’t wanna miss out on this fall. COVID-19 has affected many things in fashion including the fashion shows. It’s being planned that it’ll be casted virtually live and without any guests. As conditions become safer, they’ll be adding guests in the shows little by little. With all the free time during quarantine, it’s enabled people to brainstorm and be creative towards outfit ideas and reinvent new styles. A lot of the fashion inspiration this year has come from the trends in the late 90s and early 2000s.  This year there’s a mix of grunge, preppy, neutral colors, plaid, patchwork, animal prints like cow/zebra, and jewel tones. Some big trends that are arising at t...

Fall Colors

Image
Fall Colors By: Julia Serra The best time to see all of the colors changing in northern Michigan is in late September to mid-October. The best way to see all of the colors is by doing activities and having fun. Here are some activity ideas; biking, hiking, canoeing, paddle boarding, zip lining through the trees, apple picking, horseback riding, and much more. It is awesome when you can have fun outside while still taking in all of the beautiful colors.  The best hiking trails up north are the Northern Loop, Alligator Hill Trail, Old Indian Trail, North Country Trailhead, North Point Nature Preserve, and Petoskey State Park. Other places to view the fall colors are Ocqueoc Falls State Forest Campground, Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and Tahquamenon Falls. Another way is to go up any ski hill and look down at all the pretty colors.  Best roads while driving to northern Michigan to see the leaves are; Long Rapids Road,...

Tom Brady on the Bucs Back on March 20th Tom Brady decided to leave the New England Patriots,  whom he had been playing with for since the year 2000. He had signed a two year contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers coming off an underwhelming 7-9 record and had looked to upgrade their Quarterback position. Brady has just since made his debut with the Buccaneers which resulted in a loss to the New Orleans Saints.  It seems pretty bizarre to see Tom Brady on any other football team other than the New England Patriots and will take some time to get used to. The 6 time super bowl champion has racked up over 74,000 career passing yards and over 500 touchdowns. He has won many awards in his career winning three NFL most valuable player awards (2007,2010,2017) NFL comeback player of the year award (2009) and Sports illustrated Sportsperson of the year (2005). Brady has broken many records in his career such as the total number of yards in NFL history (82.987), Super bowl appear...
Events cancelled at Foley  by Rachel Kidder Bishop Foley has been practicing and waiting for their fall athletics since we’ve been back to school. WIth games starting for football, volleyball, and soccer, for now only two family members per player are allowed in the stands. Having fewer people in the stands keeps everyone socially distant. The athletes of the sporting event still have to wear masks. Many students complain of it being hard to breathe while wearing a mask and exercising.  Senior parking spot painting was still allowed. The senior class enjoyed having the opportunity to see their friends and be a part of the Foley traditions. Parking spot painting is a good example of an event that encourages social distancing yet it was still interactive with our classmates.  Our class retreats have been cancelled at this time, no answer as to if or when they will happen.  Plays and events scheduled for later in the year are still being prepared for as if t...
How COVID-19 Has Affected High School Sports by Dane Karwoski COVID-19’s strong effects on coaches, teachers, and high school students who are involved in any type of sport in the 2020-2021 school year. Many student-athletes in all schools have been upset about the cancellation of sports. With COVID-19 in the way of athletics, it has been very difficult for student-athletes to stay in shape over this pandemic. During a time like this, most student-athletes have a mixture of many different emotions like fear, confusion, and anger. With the recent cancellation of High School Football in the fall by the MHSAA, many football players have been really angered by the decision. Senior Cooper Harbowy from Bishop Foley High school has had a tough time dealing with the news of the cancellation of football. “It's been a hard thing to take in, I just want to play for my last year of high school,” he said. “The break from high school sports has had a negative effect not just on me, but ...

Fate of the NFL

The Fate of the Football Team Remains Uncertain Amidst the Coronavirus Pandemic  by Patrick Broderick The Coronavirus has certainly taken a toll on all of our daily lives. From having to wear masks, social distance, not even being able to workout in the gym, play sports the same way, or even have gatherings of more than 100 people. Although one area that was affected that may have actually had the biggest impact on high schoolers is how it affected the sports world. Sports are a very important aspect of high school. In fact, it is the focal point of many social events. It is a great way to reduce stress for the players, and it is an opportunity to exercise. Arguably the sport that took the biggest hit in Michigan was high school football. The postponement of football to the spring not only had an affect on the players but on the students who would come to support the team as well. Students can no longer cheer on th...

The virus has caused mayhem and forced the Nba to do some hard thinking about how they are going to keep playing and entertaining the fans. Well the NBA has thought of just the way. The NBA bubble is located in Orlando Florida and is the current location for all NBA games to be scheduled. The Bubble is Located at Disney World which makes it even that much more interesting to watch. While there's only one court to play games on, the NBA has still found a way to fit in all playoff games in the bubble. Although the NBA bubble has no fans there is a chance for you to become a virtual fan. By being selected by the team you can become a virtual fan at one of the games. Only around 300 fans are select...

How the Entertainment Industry is Dealing with the Effects of COVID-19 By Nora Hanna Covid-19 has affected almost everyone and everything in many different ways which includes how people are going back to school and work, sport events, eating at or from restaurants, but a big one is the entertainment industry which includes music and movies.  The Entertainment industry has been a part of our lives whether you listen to music, like to watch movies and tv shows, or watch the big music events and movie awards such as the Grammys, Vmas, the Oscars, etc. But, what’s happening to that industry now with the effects of COVID-19?  Many movies that were set to premiere this year have gotten called off or delayed. Many movies got a new release dating such as  Wonder Woman 1984 coming out on October 2nd (orig. June 2020 ) Marvel’s Black Widow coming out on November 6th (orig. May 1, 2020) Tenet coming out on August 26th internationally and Labor Day weekend in select US c...
New School Lunches By Rachel Maltese This school year, Bishop Foley is handling lunch a little bit differently than last year due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Instead of two lunches, A and B, there are now three lunches labeled A, B, and C. Each lunch period is given twenty minutes to eat. ‘A’ lunch starts at 10:50 AM, right after 3rd hour, ‘B’ lunch starts at 11:20 AM, in between 4th hour, which is new this year, and ‘C’ lunch starts at 11:40 AM, after 4th hour.  This is to help ensure proper social distancing during lunches since masks will be off while eating. Three lunches help minimize the number of people in the cafeteria at a time. The chairs are now spaced out more, and are marked with blue tape. They must stay inside the blue tape. When getting out of your seat, make sure to have your mask on. Also, while in line to get the school lunch, you have t...
Tips and tricks on staying healthy this school year By: Andrea Friedel It’s no secret that the 2020-2021 school year is looking a bit different than the previous years. It could be the masks or the plexiglass between desks that sparked your realization. COVID-19 has affected everyone’s daily life in one way or another. Over the summer, people all around the world have learned to adapt to this new normal. But with the new school year starting up, what other safety precautions are necessary?  With the help of the teachers and other staff members we were able to begin our new school year in person, with the sacrifice of wearing masks throughout the day. I think we can all agree that wearing these masks can get us where we need to be, but what other precautions should the students practice at home and in the halls?  To start, the most important one, wash your hands! Washing your hands frequently can reduce the spread of COVID-19 immensely. Key times to wash your han...
Students Get Used to Our COVID-19 Rules By: Alina Prykazka This year at Bishop Foley Catholic High School students and teachers finally arrive back at school, but with new rules and challenges to face. Everyone in the building has to wear a mask, as social distance in the hallways and in classrooms.  While eating lunch in the cafeteria, only 1-3 students are allowed at each lunch table. Surely, it must be difficult for staff and students to interact with each other with these masks covering their mouth and nose, while also maintaining a good 4-6 feet away from each person.  Sometimes change is difficult to adjust to. Some students and teachers say they have a hard time breathing in the masks, others work just fine with it. Some people have a hard time hearing others, when the other person is wearing a mask. You can not see their lip movements, which means you have to understand them only based on hearing. Of course, teachers Mrs. Cleghorn and Mrs. Petty have thought ahead ...
