Fall Colors
By: Julia Serra
The best time to see all of the colors changing in northern Michigan is in late September to mid-October. The best way to see all of the colors is by doing activities and having fun. Here are some activity ideas; biking, hiking, canoeing, paddle boarding, zip lining through the trees, apple picking, horseback riding, and much more. It is awesome when you can have fun outside while still taking in all of the beautiful colors.
The best hiking trails up north are the Northern Loop, Alligator Hill Trail, Old Indian Trail, North Country Trailhead, North Point Nature Preserve, and Petoskey State Park. Other places to view the fall colors are Ocqueoc Falls State Forest Campground, Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and Tahquamenon Falls. Another way is to go up any ski hill and look down at all the pretty colors.
Best roads while driving to northern Michigan to see the leaves are; Long Rapids Road, Pinney Bridge Road off M-66, Pleasantview Road North of Boyne Highlands to Robinson Road, State Road from Harbor Springs to Cross Village, and North Eagle Highway just to name a few.
Should you spend more than one day up north? In northern Michigan there is a lot to do at this time of the season. One idea is you could either bring bikes, or rent them up north. Then, you could spend an afternoon biking on the trails taking in all the colors. But if you don't want to bike you could always go hiking. Or if you would rather be by the water you could go canoeing or paddleboarding. So, I believe that going up north to view the colors is worth it. And you should at least spend a whole day doing activities and enjoying the outdoors.
