Fate of the NFL

The Fate of the Football Team Remains Uncertain Amidst the Coronavirus Pandemic
by Patrick Broderick

The Coronavirus has certainly taken a toll on all of our daily lives. From having to wear masks, social distance, not even being able to workout in the gym, play sports the same way, or even have gatherings of more than 100 people. Although one area that was affected that may have actually had the biggest impact on high schoolers is how it affected the sports world. Sports are a very important aspect of high school. In fact, it is the focal point of many social events. It is a great way to reduce stress for the players, and it is an opportunity to exercise. Arguably the sport that took the biggest hit in Michigan was high school football. The postponement of football to the spring not only had an affect on the players but on the students who would come to support the team as well. Students can no longer cheer on their team, they can’t gather as a student body and show their school spirit, we can’t all come together to watch the big rivalry games, and for seniors, their last football season, as players and fans, still hangs in the balance. Even with so much uncertainty about what will happen in the future regarding football, the team is still training with high hopes that they will get their shining moment in spring. For seniors, a spring season could have a heavy impact on their career as a player as well. With the senior season being a big factor in recruiting, many athletes in the school and across the state may be taking every chance they can get to play at the next level. Senior Nick Harnadeck who has had a hard time coping that he might not be able to play this year has stated that “It has affected the recruiting process by giving seniors less time to put out their highlight tapes.” He said. “Without highlight tapes, coaches will probably not want you playing for their teams.” For the team as a whole, there can be some positives to take away from the postponement of high school football as well. One of those positives and possibly the one most critical to the season is that the team will have had more time than ever to train, get their bodies ready for the season, and perfect the plays and all of the factors that go into having a good season. “The season moving to spring gives our team extra time to become better, therefore we will play better.” Said Nick Harnadeck.  With all the time that the team will have to prepare, this could turn out to be one of the most exciting seasons Foley has ever seen. The training includes practices, conditioning, and 7 on 7 games. Another one of the positives of postponing the season is that there is still hope that fans will get to enjoy the season just as much as the players will. With so much uncertainty ahead in the future, there is always a possibility that circumstances regarding the virus could change greatly, and hopefully by the time spring comes around, we can all enjoy our football team winning some games this season.
