How COVID-19 Has Affected High School Sports by Dane Karwoski

COVID-19’s strong effects on coaches, teachers, and high school students who are involved in any type of sport in the 2020-2021 school year.

Many student-athletes in all schools have been upset about the cancellation of sports. With COVID-19 in the way of athletics, it has been very difficult for student-athletes to stay in shape over this pandemic. During a time like this, most student-athletes have a mixture of many different emotions like fear, confusion, and anger. With the recent cancellation of High School Football in the fall by the MHSAA, many football players have been really angered by the decision. Senior Cooper Harbowy from Bishop Foley High school has had a tough time dealing with the news of the cancellation of football. “It's been a hard thing to take in, I just want to play for my last year of high school,” he said. “The break from high school sports has had a negative effect not just on me, but on my friends and family as well. We deserve to play.”

Student-athletes use sports as a stress reliever or anxiety relief but with this prolonged period of no sports, it has been very hard for student-athletes to do what they love. High school seniors have especially had a hard time dealing with the cancellation of sports especially for seniors who want to get scholarships and have one more year of proving their worth to colleges. But ultimately, with this closure of school sports, it will be very difficult for scouts to recruit new students.

With the lack of athletics over the time of this pandemic, many student-athletes have found different ways to entertain themselves. Some of these include playing pickup basketball games with friends, playing catch and hitting bp in the cages, learning to skateboard, getting into golf, etc. Most people personally feel that COVID-19 expanded students to many different alternatives to their normal sports and activities.
