MLB Season Update
MLB Season Update by Tommy Sharbaugh
The 60 game shortened MLB season due to The COVID-19 pandemic has been an exciting one to say the least. The Los Angeles Dodgers lead the way in the National League and the Tampa Bay Rays are ahead in the American league. With less than 30 games left in the season the playoff picture is about to be set. August 31st marked the trade deadline for this season with a few big names being sent to other teams, with Mike Clevinger being sent to the San Diego Padres and Starling Marte shipped off to the miami marlins -Miami Marlins
The MLB trade deadline was over a few hours ago and it was full of moves. The San Diego Padres and Toronto Blue Jays were the most aggressive teams coming into this deadline with both teams making a combined seven trades with other teams. The Texas Rangers traded one of their best Pitchers in Mike Minor to the Oakland Athletics for two players to be named later and cash. The Seattle Mariners acquired a top prospect Taylor Trammell from the San Diego Padres to boost their rebuild and the Minnesota Twins were not very active in trades despite recent struggles. The Colorado Rockies bolster the bullpen by trading for Mychal Givens and the Detroit Tigers make a small move by trading Cameron Maybin for young shortstop Zach Short.
We are more than thirty games into this sixity game season and the playoff picture is starting to take form. The Los Angeles Dodgers and Tampa Bay Rays are looking to pull ahead of everyone in their respective leagues. The Oakland Athletics aren’t trailing too far behind the Rays and are looking to catch up with them. The San Diego Padres are possibly the hottest team in baseball and are looking for first place in the national league. For this unpredictable 2020 season the MLB has introduced a one time only playoff format that will involve 16 teams which represent the two best teams in each division plus two wild card teams from each league. From this we might see some new teams playing for the World Series this year. Teams who are playing around .500 baseball like The Toronto Blue Jays, Miami Marlins and San Francisco Giants all have good shots of sneaking into the playoffs. It will be a great end to the seasons to see who will be the one to win it all.
