NBA Bubble

Life in the NBA Bubble by Colin Truby

With the Coronavirus shutting down all sports the NBA has taken a very different approach to continuing their playoffs. The virus has caused mayhem and forced the Nba to do some hard thinking about how they are going to keep playing and entertaining the fans. Well the NBA has thought of just the way. The NBA bubble is located in Orlando Florida and is the current location for all NBA games to be scheduled. The Bubble is Located at Disney World which makes it even that much more interesting to watch. While there's only one court to play games on, the NBA has still found a way to fit in all playoff games in the bubble. Although the NBA bubble has no fans there is a chance for you to become a virtual fan. By being selected by the team you can become a virtual fan at one of the games. Only around 300 fans are selected, so it's very rare to be selected.

Masks are required for every coach and staff member for safety, the only people in the bubble not wearing masks are the players. So far there has been very little talk about Covid-19 interrupting the rest of the playoffs, but the NBA during this pandemic has also taken notice to social justice and started a movement to encourage social Justice.

The playoffs have felt a bit off because of the entire Bubble situation but non the less still the same basketball. Currently the Milwaukee Bucks are the number one seed in the Eastern Conference. Masking the Los Angeles Lakers the one seed in the Western Conference. As the playoffs continue to go on we can expect performances from the players to be much better overall as the players become more comfortable in the bubble. The NBA has even said players could shoot better in the bubble because of the depth perception with no fans. Some memorable moments so far in the playoffs have been super exciting. Some notable performances including Luka Doncic’s 40 point triple double with the game winner in overtime at double zeros. Damian Lillard's 50 point game in his battle with Lebron James, but just coming up short, so the Lakers advanced to the semifinals.  Jamal Murray has gone off with multiple 50 point games this series to push the nuggets ahead of the Jazz.

In the bubble we have also seen some rough play, a lot more than usual. Because there's no fans watching it could take some pressure off the players and allow them to play with more heart. There have been many fights so far ,as well as flagrant fouls, and unsportsmanlike conduct calls. There's been so much going on in the bubble lately, some players have expressed how they feel about the whole situation. Some players say it’s too much basketball. Jaylen Brown said “Being here in the bubble is a challenge for a lot of guys. It’s like you’re at work all the time.”Brown also said mental health is a big concern in the bubble for players. “It’s tough being away from our families and being isolated from the rest of society.” says Brown in a post game interview. This goes to show that even our favorite players and athletes struggle with mental health, stress, anxiety just like we do. It reminds how grateful we should be  for these great athlete’s that entertain us.
