Tips and tricks on staying healthy this school year

By: Andrea Friedel

It’s no secret that the 2020-2021 school year is looking a bit different than the previous years. It could be the masks or the plexiglass between desks that sparked your realization. COVID-19 has affected everyone’s daily life in one way or another. Over the summer, people all around the world have learned to adapt to this new normal. But with the new school year starting up, what other safety precautions are necessary?

With the help of the teachers and other staff members we were able to begin our new school year in person, with the sacrifice of wearing masks throughout the day. I think we can all agree that wearing these masks can get us where we need to be, but what other precautions should the students practice at home and in the halls?

To start, the most important one, wash your hands! Washing your hands frequently can reduce the spread of COVID-19 immensely. Key times to wash your hands are before meals, after school, or after coming in contact with touch points like doorknobs. If you don’t have time to wash your hands, try hand sanitizer. Although hand sanitizer does not eliminate all the germs, it lessens the probability of spreading disease. You could bring your own hand sanitizer for in between the times you wash your hands.

Another good way to decrease the spread of COVID-19 is to keep your hands and supplies to yourself. To make sure this happens, double-check your backpacks and pencil cases to confirm you have all your necessary materials. For instance, if a fellow student asks to borrow a pencil, you should say no. Not because you don’t like that person, but because you may have transferred your germs onto that pencil. Therefore you could get your friend sick! And if one person gets infected, surely an outbreak is well on its way.

In conclusion, to keep yourself and others safe during this pandemic, make sure to wash your hands and keep to yourself. By following these simple rules we can have hope to finish the school year safely. Stay safe!
