U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team: Last Match Before Covid Strikes
USWNT or the United States Women’s National Soccer Team games have been delayed from COVID, the last game being played on March 11th, 2020. Within that game, Megan Rapinoe (#7) scored one goal, and lent Christen Press (#23) an assist to get the ball in the back of the net. The third goal was scored by Lindsey Horan (#9) with an assisted pass by Mallory Pugh. (#2). Played in Frisco, Texas, the U.S beat Japan in the “Shebelieves Cup”.
Rapinoe’s goal was scored by a free kick, only 6 minutes into the match. Rapinoe was about 10 yards outside the box, and shot a rocket directly above a 5 person wall. The ball traveled through the air, landing in the upper left corner and out of the goalie’s reach. Rapinoe celebrated with a little dance showing her excitement.
The second goal was won by a poor pass from Japan’s goalie, right to Rapinoe’s feet. She played an angled pass to Press. Press quickly received the ball and blasted it between two defenders, landing in the upper left corner, directly through the goalie’s blind spot. This goal was celebrated with many hugs and even kisses. (Remember pre-COVID times!)
Lastly, the third goal was scored by Horan off of a corner kick. After roughly 4 minutes of attacking the opposing team and a free kick, the USA girls settled for a corner that led to their final goal of the match. Horan rose above the rest of the players, allowing her to head the ball into the back of the net.
Although the match ended with the score of 3-1, the game was an even play between the players. Passes were both neat and sloppy, shots were made and missed.
